Sheila Brooks
Sheila Brooks is an award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, and dedicated advocate for minority and women’s issues and our nation’s small businesses.
Prior to starting her company in 1990, she built a distinguished television career as a news director, reporter, anchor, and documentary producer at CBS, NBC, PBS and Fox affiliate TV stations across the country. Her 29 years of experience and success in the television and communications industry has resulted in numerous awards for excellence in journalism, entrepreneurship and community service. She has received 36 National Telly Awards, a National Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television, induction into the National Capital/Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle, two local Emmy Awards, and four local Emmy Nominations. Among her entrepreneurial honors, she has received the 2005 Enterprising Women of the Year Award from Enterprising Women Magazine, the 2002 and 1998 Women in Business Advocate of the Year Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the 1998 Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, the 1997 Small Business Advocate of the Year Award from the Department of Defense Regional Council for Small Business, and the 1995 Supplier of the Year Award from the Maryland/District of Columbia Minority Supplier Development Council (MD/DC MSDC).
A sought-after speaker, Ms. Brooks testifies before the United States Congress and presents at various business and journalism conferences, schools and universities throughout the country. Currently, she serves as National Spokesperson for a multi-year research effort which engages women of color entrepreneurs in a dialogue about the factors that are preventing them from growing their businesses, and the actions that are necessary to meet and overcome those barriers. The “Women of Color” research project is sponsored by the Center for Women’s Business Research and Babson College.
Ms. Brooks is a member of The Presidents’ RoundTable, a CEO membership organization. She serves on the Board of Trustees for The Lab School of Washington and Associated Black Charities in Baltimore. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Women’s Business Research, MD/DC MSDC, and Associated Black Charities. She serves as Chair of the Women’s Advisory Board for MassMutual Financial Group and as a member of the Advisory Board for Women in Film and Video.
Ms. Brooks is an alumna of the Leadership Washington program, the Advanced Management Education Program at Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management Minority Business Executive Program, and the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration Minority Business Executive Program at Dartmouth College. She has a B.A. in communications with a major in broadcast journalism from the University of Washington in Seattle and an M.A. in political science from Howard University.
